Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy for PS/MS 007

PS/MS 007 is pleased to offer students a cell phone-free environment. We have found that this greatly improves school culture and raises academic achievement. Cell phones are collected upon entry into the school and stored during the day in the principal’s office. Parents and Guardians who need to contact students during the school day may send a message through the main office.

Students may use devices for non-educational purposes before morning classes begin and after school hours. After-school programs on school premises will provide their own cell phone/electronic device policies.

During the school day, if a student is seen to have a cell phone or is wearing earbuds or headphones not provided in class, a staff member will direct the student to turn over the device/s.  All PS/MS 007 staff members will follow the same response protocol for cell phone and device usage.

First Incident: Warning given; phone/device will be stored in principal’s office until the end of the day.

Second Incident: Parent/guardian will be contacted. One detention will be issued. Phone/device will be held in the principal’s office until the end of the school day for student to retrieve.

Third Incident: Parent/guardian will be contacted. One detention will be issued. Phone/device will be held in the principal’s office until it is retrieved by parent or guardian.

Refusal to surrender a phone or other prohibited device when instructed to do so is considered defiance. Parent/guardian will be informed and disciplinary consequences may follow.

Electronic devices of all kinds, including cell phones, headphones, earbuds, iPods, iPads, smart watches, etc. must be stored away during ANY type of exam (teacher test, city, or state test). If a phone/device is visible during any test, it MUST be powered off and turned over to the proctor for the duration of the test. When all tests have been completed and collected, electronic devices will be returned to students; cell phones will be stored in the principal’s office until the end of the day.

We greatly appreciate your support of this school policy.
