Educational Trip Policy

Educational trips enhance learning if they are carefully planned and relevant to the curriculum.  Each teacher may plan trips but not less than one month prior to state or city standardized tests.  Trips are limited to one per month per class and must receive prior approval of the principal.  June trips must be completed by June 15th.  Trips are posted on the monthly calendar in the main office.  The following procedures must be followed for each and every trip:
  1. A Trip Approval Form (obtained from the main office) must be filled out and approved by the Principal a minimum of three weeks before the date of the trip.  The cafeteria must be notified at least 2 weeks prior to the trip.
  2. A writtenField Trip Consent Form is needed for every student on every trip (including walking trips outside the building).  Collection of consent forms should be completed within 48 hours of the trip.  PHONE CONSENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED.  Any child who does not bring the required permission slip cannot attend the trip.
  3. All students must wear a uniform shirt with a school logo in order to attend any class trip.
  4. You must inform affected colleagues of your anticipated trip so they can plan accordingly for students who may miss instruction.
  5. The ratio of students to adults for supervision on a trip is 10 to 1.  Teachers may want to plan trips with their colleagues to ensure adequate adult supervision.
  6. A list of names of all children attending/not attending the trip must be submitted to the Main Office immediately prior to leaving the building on the day of the trip.
  7. The teacher MUST RETURN to the school building with THE ENTIRE GROUP of students who accompanied him/her on the trip.
  8. Trips are considered an extension of a child’s educational experience. Students who exhibit behavioral problems may not be excluded from a trip.  The parents of such students must be offered the opportunity to accompany their child on the trip.  If the parent is not available, please notify administration so that other arrangements may be made.

There are three means of transportation available for school trips:

  1. Walking: Self-explanatory.
  2. School Bus: It is the teacher’s responsibility to make arrangements for school buses at least 30 days prior to the trip.  See our Transportation Coordinator, Ms. De Jesus, in the main office for assistance with scheduling bus transportation. If you do not receive confirmation of your bus within two weeks of the trip, please notify the office.  Note: School buses are only available from 9:30am to 1:30pm.
  3. SubwayTo plan a trip by subway, obtain a blank train pass from Ms. De Jesus at least ten days in advance of the trip date.  Complete the form and return it to the main office where it will be processed and returned to you on the day of the trip.
